The F1 Commission
has approved the changes to the new points system suggested by the
Sporting Working Group. They had a meeting on Monday in Paris to
discuss several issues.
A driver will now
earn 18 points instead of 20 points for second position while the
winner will still get 25 points.
Below are the
points systems:
Old: 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1
New points system: 25-20-15-10-8-6-5-3-2-1
Revised system: 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1
The difference
between first and second is therefore seven points instead of five.
More changes to the regulations are not ideal for the sport, but some
team bosses feel that sometimes it's necessary. Red Bull Racing's
team boss Christian Horner feels the greater points difference will
motivate drivers to fight harder for the win.
"I think you
should never be afraid of change so long as it is a change for the
better. And I think that what the points are trying to be designed to
do are first of all - to generate a pecking order perhaps lower down
in the top ten - so that with the points going down to 10th place
there is reward for a top ten finish," he said. |
