BMW is not taking
part in F1 this season after the German manufacturer decided to quit
the sport, but Sauber's name is still listed officially as BMW Sauber
F1 team. The outfit's preview for the weekend's race did however have
new logo which said Sauber Motorsport.
A name change was
expected before the first race, but Sauber insisted that they
retained the name so that they don't jeopardise the commercial
rewards due to its previous owners. The team finished sixth overall
in 2009.
Some insiders
believe that BMW still holds shares in the team despite denying it.
By keeping the name BMW as part of the Sauber name they still get the
advertising mileage out of it. And they are in a position to say they
are not officially taking part in F1.
"It's very
simple. We enrolled last summer with that (BMW) name for the 2010
season and it is still our name. We have not yet made an application
to change it, and the timing of that is still open," team owner
Peter Sauber said. |
